Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a press conference in Ankara on May 15 discussed the situation at the front regarding potential actions by the Russian army in the Sumy region. According to him, Russian troops have been actively engaged in combat operations in various directions along the Ukrainian front for several months, particularly in the Sumy region, where, he stated, approximately 67,000 Russian servicemen are concentrated.

Zelensky emphasized that the Ukrainian command is making every effort to prevent the unification of Russian units, which is why Russian forces are currently focused on restoring and regrouping their troops. He added:

“Therefore, the Russians are currently working on restoring and regrouping their forces”

Situation at the Front in the Sumy Region

In April, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported active combat engagements in the region. At the same time, Dmytro Lantushenko, head of the public relations service of the 117th separate brigade of the Territorial Defense, noted that there are no large-scale assault operations being conducted by the Russians in the Sumy region; instead, there are active small sabotage and reconnaissance groups operating throughout the territory of the region.

At the end of March, Zelensky stated in an interview with the French publication Le Figaro that Russia is preparing for a spring offensive in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions, which raises concerns for Ukrainian defense forces.

Currently, the situation remains tense, and Ukrainian military personnel continue to monitor and assess the situation at the front, striving to prevent further advances of Russian troops in the region.
