Call for Global Action Against Nuclear Security Threats
“Tehran has long ignored the calls of the IAEA and the international community, undermining the nuclear order. This should become a global rule: whenever someone undermines or threatens international peace and security, strict sanctions must be imposed immediately,” he wrote in a telegram.
Volodymyr Zelensky specifically pointed to Russia, which, according to him, acts in close cooperation with Iran. The president emphasized that the seizure of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant by Russian troops and its use as a tool for nuclear blackmail poses a global threat.
International Response to Violations of Nuclear Order
Zelensky called on the international community for a consolidated and decisive response to the actions of states that ignore the foundations of international law and threaten nuclear security. The president believes it is necessary to strengthen sanctions against the Russian nuclear sector and emphasized the importance of collective pressure to reinforce the nuclear order in the world.
The United Nations has decided to restore the arms embargo and other sanctions against Iran. The initiators of this decision were the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, who accused Iran of violating the 2015 agreement on uranium enrichment limitations. Tehran, for its part, denies any intention to develop nuclear weapons and warns of a harsh response to the sanctions.
Iran’s nuclear program has a long history: initial developments began in the 1950s, and since the early 2000s, the country has been repeatedly accused of attempting to create nuclear weapons. In 2015, an international agreement was signed that provided for limitations on uranium enrichment in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. However, in 2018, the United States withdrew from this agreement, after which Iran resumed its nuclear developments.
Regarding the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, Russian troops seized the city of Enerhodar and the plant itself in early March 2022. During this time, the territory of the nuclear power plant has repeatedly come under fire, with both sides blaming each other. The Ukrainian side has repeatedly emphasized the threat of a blackout due to damage to power lines as a result of Russian shelling. In addition, Kyiv has stated that Russian military forces are using the territory of the Zaporizhzhia NPP to station military equipment and personnel.
