Australia Strengthens Support for Ukraine’s Energy Sector

Andrii Sybiha emphasized that, despite the great geographical distance, Canberra demonstrates a “clear and principled understanding of the nature of Russia’s war against Ukraine” and the importance of assistance in overcoming the challenges posed by military actions, especially during the winter period. According to him, Australian support contributes to enhancing the resilience of Ukraine’s energy system.

Earlier, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced the government’s decision to allocate an additional 10 million Australian dollars (equivalent to over 6.8 million US dollars) for the needs of the Ukrainian energy sector.

The funds will be used to “ensure light, heating, and critical services at a time when Russia continues systematic attacks on civilian areas and energy infrastructure,” she added.

Strengthening International Assistance Amid Russian Attacks

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko noted that the government is actively seeking assistance from international partners to restore and protect the energy sector following a series of attacks by Russia on the country’s critical infrastructure.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, the Russian Federation has regularly shelled Ukraine’s energy infrastructure facilities. In the fall of 2025, attacks on energy facilities significantly intensified.

The Security Service of Ukraine qualifies the strikes by Russia on energy infrastructure as crimes against humanity. According to the SBU, since the start of this year’s heating season, 256 aerial attacks on energy facilities and heating supply systems in Ukraine have been documented.
