Convicted Fraudster from Kyiv Pretrial Detention Center Defrauded Relatives of Soldiers out of 345 Thousand Hryvnias

A 35-year-old man was exposed in a Kyiv pretrial detention center for defrauding the relatives of servicemen, embezzling over 345 thousand hryvnias under the pretense of selling components for electronic warfare devices.

How the Criminal Scheme Worked

The individual, convicted for a series of property crimes, organized the scam while in custody. He posted advertisements on online platforms for the sale of electronic devices needed for the front lines. To gain the trust of potential buyers, the fraudster communicated on behalf of a soldier and used a photo of a person in military uniform.

Investigation Details

Law enforcement officials established that the fraudster was involved in at least sixteen episodes of fraudulent activity. Citizens wishing to purchase equipment to assist defenders transferred deposits to the bank card of the fraudster’s cellmate. However, none of the buyers received the promised goods.

Investigators have already notified the suspect of charges related to fraud. Currently, a pre-trial investigation is underway, with law enforcement officials determining all the circumstances of the criminal scheme and checking for possible involvement of other individuals.
