Sanctions That Could Deal a Serious Blow to Russia’s Economy

According to Richard Blumenthal, both chambers of the US Congress are currently united on the issue of imposing new sanctions against the Russian Federation. The senator emphasized that these sanctions have the potential to seriously undermine the country’s economy by limiting its primary resource – the export of energy resources.

“I think he greatly underestimates the United States of America. I think he sees us as weak and indecisive, and that we will never be able to get our act together. He does not understand what 82 senators, who have united on both sides of the aisle, mean in terms of practical impact, and that these sanctions will undermine his economy. They will be a heavy blow to a country that, as one of our colleagues said, is essentially a gas station with nuclear weapons. He has only one resource, and we are going to cut off that resource as a means of increasing revenue,” the senator noted.

Blumenthal also highlighted that the upcoming sanctions include the introduction of a 500% tariff on the import of Russian oil, gas, and petroleum products. This will apply not only to European countries but also to major importers like China and India, which purchase about 70% of Russian energy resources.

International Coordination and the Role of European Allies

Lindsey Graham, the Republican senator, announced that he will be traveling with a delegation to France and Germany to discuss increasing sanctions pressure. One of the key tasks will be to urge European partners to lower the price cap on Russian oil, which could lead to additional losses for Russia’s military machine.

Graham emphasized the importance of coordinating actions among allies, especially this summer when decisions are expected to be made in the Senate and the House of Representatives. He also stressed the need to increase oil production in Europe and to adopt a tougher stance towards China regarding cooperation with Russia.

Additionally, Ukraine is informing American lawmakers about the situation on the front lines and the impact of sanctions on Russia’s ability to conduct war. Kyiv is urging Western partners to further strengthen sanctions, emphasizing that Moscow is deliberately dragging out the negotiation process.
