History of the Commemorative Date
It was on this day in 1986 that the construction of the protective sarcophagus over the destroyed fourth reactor of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was completed. The construction of the “Shelter” facility became a key event that allowed for the halt of further radiation spread and protected Ukraine and the entire world from the threat of radioactive contamination. Although the Day of Commemoration for the Liquidators was officially established only in 2006, Ukrainians have been observing this date since 1986.
“In just 206 days, under superhuman conditions, thousands of specialists erected the first protective structure over the destroyed fourth reactor. The “Shelter” facility became a shield that stopped the uncontrolled spread of radiation and saved millions of lives. We bow our heads in respect for the courage, selflessness, and professionalism of every liquidator: from engineers and dosimetrists to drivers and military personnel. You made the impossible possible to secure a future for us and our children. Your heroism is forever etched in the history of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and in the history of humanity.”
The Importance of the Liquidators’ Heroism
Granting state status to this date serves as a reminder of the significance of the liquidators’ heroism – individuals who saved the future of subsequent generations, sacrificing their own health and lives for the safety of the country. It was precisely due to the courage and self-sacrifice of thousands of participants in the liquidation that the consequences of the disaster were localized, saving Ukraine and the entire world from catastrophic effects of radioactive contamination.
Society must preserve the memory of the heroism of the liquidators, who, without sparing themselves, stood up to defend the country in its most challenging moment in history. Their contribution to preserving life and the future of Ukraine remains invaluable and deserves sincere gratitude and deep respect.
