Donald Tusk: The idea of a ‘drone wall’ is supported by all, the defense of the eastern flank is a shared responsibility

«Ця війна не лише про Україну, йдеться про Європу» – лідери ЄС відповіли Орбану

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized that the concept of creating a so-called “drone wall” on the eastern flank of Europe is not in doubt among any of the participating countries. He stressed that the issue of security at the eastern borders is a shared responsibility of the member states of the European Union and its partners.

The Importance of Joint Actions for Europe’s Security

Tusk noted that while there is currently a lack of specific financial solutions, the process has only just begun. According to him, he is pleased that the idea of a “drone wall” is not being questioned, and he is ready to discuss both its details and the initiative of the “Eastern Flank Patrol.” Tusk emphasized that the defense of the eastern flank is a matter of collective responsibility.

“It would be good to achieve more concrete results, especially financial ones. But this is just the beginning of the process. Yes, I am satisfied because no one is questioning the very idea of a ‘drone wall’… I am ready to discuss the details of both the ‘drone wall’ and the ‘Eastern Flank Patrol.’ I reiterate: this is a shared responsibility – how we protect the eastern flank,” he said.

At the same time, the Polish Prime Minister acknowledged that there are skeptical opinions regarding the absolute effectiveness of such protection. In his view, there are no absolute guarantees of security, and those who seek them will not find a hundred percent protection.

Plans and Prospects for Strengthening the Eastern Flank

Donald Tusk reminded that he first proposed the idea of creating a European air shield back in 2014, when the first aggression of Russia against Ukraine occurred. However, at that time, the initiative did not receive the attention it deserved. Tusk emphasized that only recent provocations by the Russian Federation have forced European countries to reconsider security issues and the necessity of strengthening borders.

He noted that now no state denies the need to create a “drone wall.” Tusk stressed that the political responsibility for border security lies with all member countries, including Germany and France. According to him, while competition may arise between countries due to varying levels of technological development or production capabilities, the recognition of collective responsibility for the eastern flank remains crucial.

The European Commission is currently developing a roadmap within the framework of the “Readiness 2030” strategy, which aims to strengthen the EU’s defense capabilities by 2030. The document outlines key objectives, milestones, and flagship projects. In the overview document dedicated to this strategy, the “drone wall” is described as a multi-layered and deep zone equipped with modern technological systems for combating drones. It will ensure the detection, tracking, neutralization of unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as the targeting of ground objectives using high-precision drone technology.
