European Leaders Seek to Discuss Trump’s Upcoming Meeting with Putin

європейські лідери хочуть поговорити з Трампом перед зустріччю з Путіним

Leaders of European Union countries intend to hold consultations with U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of his scheduled negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which are set to take place in Alaska. This became known following reports of diplomatic consultations that took place on Sunday among EU ambassadors, as well as the online meeting of foreign ministers from the bloc announced for Monday.

Preparation for the High-Level Meeting

In light of these events, the White House refrained from commenting on a potential conversation with European leaders. Intense diplomatic negotiations involving American, Ukrainian, and European officials took place in the lead-up. Among the key events was a meeting in the United Kingdom on Saturday, which included U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted in his evening address that the meeting of security advisors from Ukraine and its allies, which took place on August 9 in the United Kingdom, was constructive. According to him, the main focus during the negotiations was on finding real pathways to peace.

Negotiations for a Future Peace Agreement

On August 8, Donald Trump announced his intention to negotiate with Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska. The goal of this meeting is to achieve a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. Trump suggested that a potential agreement could include “territorial exchanges” between the countries.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Putin informed Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, of his readiness to agree to a complete ceasefire on the condition that Ukraine withdraws its troops from the entire Donetsk region.

In response to such statements, Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized Kyiv’s unwavering position on the territorial integrity of the state. The President stated that Ukraine has no intention of conceding any of its territory to Russia.

“The answer to the Ukrainian territorial issue is already in the Constitution of Ukraine. No one will or can retreat from this. Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier,” the head of state emphasized.

At the same time, Zelensky stated that Ukraine is open to real solutions that would contribute to establishing peace.

According to European officials, on August 9, representatives from Ukraine and European countries prepared their own plan for ending the war. This plan is set to serve as the basis for negotiations between the presidents of the U.S. and Russia next week. Among the key provisions of this plan are the demand for a ceasefire before any further steps are taken, the possibility of territorial exchanges only on a mutual basis, and security guarantees for Ukraine, including potential NATO membership in the event of territorial concessions.
