Joint Statement on Support for Ukraine

The heads of government and state from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden issued a joint statement on August 10, emphasizing their “unwavering support for the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Ukraine.” They highlighted the importance of ensuring Ukraine’s and European countries’ participation in any peace negotiations to end the war.

Conditions for Peace Negotiations

The leaders of the Northern and Baltic countries endorsed the U.S. initiative aimed at ending the war but emphasized that a key condition for starting any negotiations is a ceasefire. The statement also noted that the people of Ukraine have the right to determine their own fate, and the process of achieving peace is impossible without Kyiv’s full participation.

“The people of Ukraine must have the freedom to determine their own fate. The path to peace cannot be paved without Ukraine’s voice. No decisions about Ukraine without Ukraine, and no decisions about Europe without Europe,” the statement said, also emphasizing that “negotiations can only take place on the condition of a ceasefire.”

Additionally, the parties confirmed their readiness to continue providing financial and military support to Ukraine. They also plan to maintain and strengthen sanctions against Russia to support pressure on the aggressor country.
