The Key Role of the US in Ukraine’s Security Issues
The conversation included French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and other representatives from European countries. According to sources, Macron emphasized the need for a clear position from Washington regarding the protection of Ukraine, stating that the US must “clearly explain” how security guarantees for the Ukrainian state will be provided.
European leaders stressed that any agreements regarding Ukraine’s future must be accompanied by reliable security guarantees from the US.
Concerns About the US Position and European Leaders’ Reactions
According to a German publication, participants in the conversation expressed concerns that the US might leave Ukraine without support on territorial issues if there is no clear definition of security guarantees. In particular, Finnish President Alexander Stubb emphasized the unacceptability of leaving Ukraine alone with representatives of American President Donald Trump — Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who recently visited Moscow.
“The President did not speak in that manner,” the Élysée Palace stated.
Several participants in the call confirmed the fact of the conversation and the accuracy of its content, although they declined to confirm specific quotes. At the same time, officials in Paris denied reports of an alleged “betrayal” by the US, stating that President Macron did not make such statements.
