Lecture on the Meat Traditions of Kyivan Rus
One of the special events within the exhibition will be a lecture by candidate of historical sciences and research fellow at the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Mykhailo Kublia. On June 14, he will discuss the characteristics of the meat diet of Kyiv residents during the Kyivan Rus period. Guests will learn about the types of meat that were popular in princely Kyiv—from beef to game—what role social status, church fasts, and geography played in shaping dietary habits, as revealed by archaeological finds from Podil and the Upper City, as well as what details about princely feasts are found in ancient chronicles.
“During the lecture, you will learn: what types of meat were consumed in princely Kyiv—from traditional beef to gourmet game; what the bones of animals found during archaeological excavations in the areas of Podil and the Upper City reveal; how social status, church fasts, and geography influenced the meat diet; and what chronicles say about princely feasts, hunting trophies, and celebrations featuring meat dishes.”
