EU extends sanctions against Russia until February 2027 due to aggression against Ukraine

Євросоюз продовжив на рік санкції проти РФ

Reasons for extending the sanctions

The EU’s decision emphasizes that these restrictive measures remain relevant as the Russian Federation continues to violate international law. In particular, it highlights Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.

“As long as the illegal actions of the Russian Federation continue to violate fundamental norms of international law, including, in particular, the prohibition on the use of force enshrined in Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, or international humanitarian law, it is appropriate to keep all measures imposed by the Union in place.”

Demands of the international community

The European Union also reminded of the resolution of the UN General Assembly adopted on February 24, 2025. In this document, the international community calls on Russia to immediately, completely, and unconditionally withdraw its troops from the territory of Ukraine within internationally recognized borders, as well as to cease all hostilities, including attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure.

The EU’s decision will take effect on February 24, 2026, and will remain in force until February 2027, keeping all existing sanctions against Russia unchanged in response to the ongoing aggression against Ukraine.
