A large-scale road traffic accident with tragic consequences occurred on Beresteiskyi Highway. As a result of the collision between a truck and a Mercedes SUV, a 16-year-old passenger was killed, and three other minors sustained injuries and were hospitalized.

Circumstances of the Accident and Actions of the Drivers
The incident took place on Monday, December 22, at approximately 9:00 AM. According to preliminary data, the driver of the DAF truck failed to yield while making a turn towards Zhytomyr, which led to a collision with the Mercedes SUV that was traveling in the opposite lane. As a result of the accident, the 16-year-old passenger of the Mercedes died at the scene. Three other minors who were in the car, along with the driver, were taken to the hospital with injuries of varying severity.
“It has been preliminarily established that the driver of the DAF truck, while executing a maneuver to turn towards the city of Zhytomyr, failed to yield and caused a collision with the Mercedes vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. As a result of the collision, the 16-year-old passenger of the SUV died at the scene of the accident, while the driver and three of his minor passengers were hospitalized with injuries,” the statement reads.
Preliminary Investigation and Initial Information
Law enforcement officers who arrived at the scene determined that the 59-year-old driver of the truck was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Currently, a criminal proceeding has been opened regarding the traffic accident under part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanctions of this article provide for liability for violating traffic safety rules that resulted in a person’s death.
