Attempted Extortion Under a False Pretext

The law enforcement agencies of Kyiv announced that four city residents were suspected of trying to force a man, who promotes social media pages, to hand over $50,000. According to the investigation, one of the suspects ordered services from the victim to promote his own cryptocurrency page. After learning about the man’s income, the suspect decided that he allegedly owed him a large sum of money.

To execute their criminal plan, one of the accomplices, posing as a new client, invited the victim to a meeting. The negotiations took place in a car. After the “client” left the vehicle, two other suspects, armed with a pistol and handcuffs, entered the car.

“The extortionists threatened the man, forcing him to transfer money from his cryptocurrency wallets to them; however, he realized that the pistol was a toy, so he began to resist,” the prosecutor’s office reported.

Investigation and Preventive Measures

Three young men aged 19, 20, and 21, as well as a 41-year-old man who is the uncle of one of them, have been charged with committing a crime. Two of the detainees are accused of extorting money as part of a group conspiracy under martial law (Part 4 of Article 189 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). Based on the prosecutor’s request, the court has chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention for them.

As for the other two participants in the case, they have been charged with aiding and abetting extortion (Part 5 of Article 27, Part 4 of Article 189 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). Currently, these individuals are under house arrest.
