Tension Over US Statements Regarding Greenland

France’s initiative has gained particular relevance against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump’s visit to Davos, where he is expected to use the World Economic Forum to promote the idea of establishing US control over Greenland. This position from Washington raises concerns among European leaders and is met with resistance from Europe.

In his speech at Davos, Emmanuel Macron emphasized the importance of adhering to international law and collective approaches to managing global issues, warning against the dominance of the “law of the strong” in international relations.

“We must not move towards a lawless world, where everything is determined solely by power, a world without effective collective governance, leading to relentless competition,” Macron stressed.

Reaction of European Leaders to US Actions

The President of France firmly rejected both Trump’s desire to acquire Greenland and the US intentions to impose additional tariffs on eight European countries. His remarks were a sharp response to Trump’s statements regarding a potential increase in tariffs if Europe does not support the American initiative on Greenland.

Other European leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, have also criticized the US. They emphasized the need to strengthen European cooperation and collective security.

During the forum, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called for restraint and noted that he hopes to avoid a trade conflict between the US and the EU, expressing confidence in the possibility of reaching mutually acceptable agreements.

Donald Trump is expected to speak in Davos on January 21.

On January 10, Trump stated Washington’s intention to “do something” regarding Greenland even without the consent of its residents. The White House is considering various ways to establish control over the island, from utilizing American military forces to purchasing the territory.

Donald Trump has repeatedly emphasized the strategic importance of Greenland for US security, highlighting its rich natural resources and significant geopolitical location. He claims that Denmark, under whose autonomy the island falls, does not pay enough attention to its defense, and that US control, in Trump’s view, would prevent a potential occupation of the island by Russia or China.
