A Fraudster Who Posed as a Sorcerer on Social Media Arrested in Kyiv

A Kyiv resident is suspected of fraud, which could lead to a sentence of up to eight years in prison.

Law enforcement officers from the Dnipro Police Department, together with specialists from the Cybercrime Prevention Unit, uncovered a Kyiv resident who organized a scheme to deceive citizens online. The perpetrator created fake accounts on popular social media platforms, where he presented himself as a “sorcerer” and offered pseudo-magical services.

Fraud Scheme and Cost of Services

During the investigation, police discovered that the 28-year-old man communicated with potential victims under the guise of a “healer” and promised to remove “curses,” find missing persons, and conduct “healing rituals” for various ailments. The cost of such services ranged from 400 to 4500 hryvnias. After receiving the funds on his bank card, he immediately blocked the clients, preventing any further contact.

“During the investigation, law enforcement established that the 28-year-old Kyiv resident developed a scheme to extort money: he created accounts on popular social media, where he corresponded with ‘clients’ as a ‘sorcerer’ and provided ‘services’ for supposedly removing ‘curses,’ searching for missing persons, and conducting ‘healing rituals’ for illnesses,” the police reported.

Pre-Trial Investigation Ongoing

Investigators have already documented seven episodes of such illegal activities, but the search for other victims continues. According to the police, the perpetrator has been notified of suspicion under part 4 of Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – fraud. The penalty for this article provides for up to eight years of imprisonment.
