According to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine, from 2016 to 2025, 71 current and former Members of Parliament received suspicions in criminal proceedings. Of these, 42 were notified of suspicion in the last three years. This was reported by the NABU press service.
Main Corruption Offenses Among MPs
Among the suspects, 31 individuals are members of the current, ninth convocation of the Verkhovna Rada. According to NABU, the most common crimes involving elected officials are:
- embezzlement or misappropriation of property;
- receiving illegal benefits;
- abuse of power or official position;
- inaccurate declaration;
- illegal enrichment.
Legislative Changes and Public Reactions
On July 22, the Verkhovna Rada adopted bill No. 12414, which, as noted, limits the independence of NABU and SAP. Following this, NABU head Semen Kryvonos urged the President of Ukraine to veto this document, but Volodymyr Zelensky signed the bill on the same day.
These legislative changes sparked protests in Ukraine and raised concerns among Western partners.
Subsequently, President Zelensky submitted a new bill to parliament aimed at strengthening the powers of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office. NABU positively assessed bill No. 13533, as it restores all procedural powers and guarantees independence for anti-corruption agencies.
Verkhovna Rada Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk stated that the consideration of the new presidential bill in parliament will take place on July 31.
