Support from the International Community and Ukraine’s Position

“In decisive moments, the international community must be clear in its position. Today is such a moment. For us, this is not just another vote. It is a confirmation that Ukraine is not alone – and that the principles of the UN Charter still matter.”

Sibiga thanked the 107 member states that voted in favor of the document, emphasizing that Kyiv will continue its efforts to achieve a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

Details of the Adopted Resolution and Future Negotiations

The UN General Assembly approved the resolution with 107 votes in favor, while 12 countries voted against it, and 51 abstained. The text of the document emphasizes that the full-scale aggression of the Russian Federation has been ongoing for four years and is leading to “devastating and lasting consequences” for Ukraine, as well as negatively affecting regional and global stability.

The Assembly reiterates its call for a just and sustainable peace based on international law, and demands a complete exchange of prisoners of war and the return of deported civilians, including children. The document also notes support for the efforts of the United States, European countries, and other states aimed at ending the war.

It is worth noting that several rounds of trilateral negotiations took place in January and February between Ukraine, the USA, and Russia regarding ways to cease hostilities. Although no official information about specific results has been released, after the meeting on February 5, the parties agreed on a prisoner exchange – the first in the last five months.

US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Stephen Witkoff, stated in an interview with Fox News that “good news” is expected in the coming weeks, and also suggested the possibility of a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Despite the mediation efforts of the USA, Russia still shows no willingness to abandon its rigid demands, including the demand for Ukraine to relinquish territories in Donbas. Ukraine, in turn, continues to insist on receiving strong security guarantees from the USA and European partners to protect against future aggression from the Russian Federation.
