Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Reveals Details of UN General Assembly Resolution on Peace

Тихий про заяву Держдепу щодо виходу США із переговорів між Україною й Росією

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has reported that the position of the United States during the vote on the UN General Assembly resolution supporting lasting peace in Ukraine was not a surprise for Kyiv. Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Georgiy Tikhiy, noted that a similar situation occurred last year when two different resolutions – the Ukrainian and the American – were considered.

This is reported by Kyiv24

“This did not come as a surprise to us, given last year’s events at the UN General Assembly – everyone remembers how two resolutions, the Ukrainian and the American, were voted on back then.”

Record Support and Diplomatic Efforts

According to Georgiy Tikhiy, the significant number of votes in support of the Ukrainian resolution was a pleasant surprise. This result was achieved through five days of intense work by the Ukrainian diplomatic system – from the permanent mission to the UN and diplomatic missions abroad to the personal involvement of Minister Andriy Sybiga, who persuaded other countries to support the Ukrainian document. Deputy Minister Maryana Betza specifically traveled to New York to participate in efforts to secure support during the vote.

Ukrainian diplomats hoped to receive more than 90 votes, which would have been a commendable result compared to last year; however, in reality, 107 countries voted in favor of the resolution. Georgiy Tikhiy called this a “wonderful result and a real victory for Ukrainian diplomacy in the realm of international organizations.”

Voting Outcomes and Countries’ Positions

During the voting, 51 countries, including the United States, abstained. According to UN information, the US proposed to hold a separate vote on two points of the document, but this initiative did not find support – 69 countries voted against, and 11 in favor.

Countries that opposed the resolution included Russia, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Iran, Mali, Nicaragua, Niger, and Sudan.

Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga welcomed the adoption of the resolution and emphasized that it confirms the relevance of the principles of the UN Charter.

In the text of the resolution, the General Assembly acknowledges and commends the efforts of the United States, European countries, and other member states aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
