Group of Young Men Detained on Khreshchatyk for Assaulting Passersby While Intoxicated

In the center of Kyiv, on Khreshchatyk, the police detained a group of young men who, while under the influence of alcohol, assaulted two passersby. According to law enforcement, the incident occurred in the evening when the perpetrators provoked a conflict with a 21-year-old man returning home and subsequently beat him up.

Details of the Assault and Police Actions

During the attack on the young man, one of the passersby, a 37-year-old man, witnessed the incident and admonished the hooligans. In response, the group of aggressive young men turned on him, knocked him to the ground, and continued to strike him, preventing him from getting up.

“The passerby who witnessed the incident made a remark to them. In response, the aggressively inclined young men charged at the 37-year-old man, knocked him to the ground, and continued to beat him, not allowing him to rise,” the statement reads.

One of the attackers was detained by the police at the scene, while two others were located shortly after the incident. The detainees turned out to be local residents aged between 19 and 22. Two of them had already been held accountable for similar offenses.

Criminal Liability for Hooliganism

The perpetrators have been notified of suspicion under Part 3 of Article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – hooliganism committed by a group of individuals with resistance against citizens attempting to stop illegal actions. This article provides for a penalty of imprisonment for up to five years.
