The King of the United Kingdom, Charles III, celebrated the first anniversary of the signing of the historic agreement on a century-long partnership between the United Kingdom and Ukraine on January 16. This event marked a significant milestone in the relations between the two nations, highlighting the strength of their alliance, especially in light of the ongoing aggression from Russia against Ukraine.
Significance of the Century-Long Partnership Agreement
In his address, King Charles III expressed hope that the close cooperation between the United Kingdom and Ukraine would serve as an important source of support and hope for the Ukrainian people. He emphasized the heroic resilience and determination of Ukrainians, who demonstrate courage and endurance during this extraordinarily challenging period.
“The heroic resilience of Ukraine in the face of such terrible hardships and pain is an extraordinary example for the world, and I am consistently impressed by the incredible bravery, courage, and fortitude displayed by the Ukrainian people,” the royal press service stated.
The King also wished for a just and sustainable peace for Ukraine, which would guarantee the country’s security, sovereignty, and prosperity.
Joint Steps to Strengthen Cooperation
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported on a meeting with the UK Minister of Justice, David Lammy. During the negotiations, the parties discussed the consequences of Russian missile attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and further measures to enhance protection. Zelensky thanked the British government for providing the latest package of energy support at a critical time for Ukraine. Additionally, according to the president, discussions included issues of international diplomacy and sanctions policy against Russia.
The president added that the Ukrainian side provided the British minister with detailed information regarding the situation at the front and the losses of Russian troops. Furthermore, attention was drawn to Russia’s attempts to recruit foreign nationals, particularly from Global South countries, to participate in the war against Ukraine. Zelensky stressed the need to enhance coordination among international partners to counter these instances.
David Lammy noted that it was a great honor for him to meet with the President of Ukraine and emphasized the ongoing support for Ukraine from the United Kingdom: “Today and every day, we stand with Ukraine.”
On January 16, 2025, in Kyiv, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and President Volodymyr Zelensky signed the century-long partnership agreement, which consists of 14 articles. The document focuses on deepening defense cooperation, security, achieving consensus on Ukraine’s NATO membership, developing the energy sector, justice, combating information manipulation, utilizing socio-cultural ties, and cooperating on migration policy.
According to the terms of the agreement, Ukraine will receive military assistance from the United Kingdom amounting to at least $3.6 billion annually, significantly enhancing the country’s defense capabilities.
