Russian President Dmitry Peskov stated that Vladimir Putin aims to shift the issue of resolving the situation in Ukraine towards a peaceful direction. However, according to Peskov, Moscow’s key objectives remain unchanged.

“President Putin has repeatedly expressed his desire to transition the Ukrainian resolution to a peaceful track as soon as possible. This is a lengthy process that requires effort, and it is not easy… Our main goal is to achieve our objectives. Our goals are clear, obvious, and they do not change,” Peskov said in an interview with the state television channel “Russia-1” on July 20.

Kremlin’s Position on War Goals

Since the onset of the full-scale aggression in February 2022, Vladimir Putin has stated that the so-called “denazification” and “demilitarization” of Ukraine are the Kremlin’s primary tasks. Currently, Russian representatives are focusing on the need to eliminate the “root causes” of the conflict. In particular, they cite NATO’s eastward expansion and Ukraine’s aspiration to become part of the Alliance.

Zelensky Calls for Negotiations

On July 19, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his evening video address, called on the Russian Federation for a meeting at the leadership level to achieve lasting peace. According to the head of the Ukrainian state, Ukraine is ready to hold such a meeting.
