The Paton Bridge has not undergone major repairs for over 70 years

Residents of Kyiv have appealed to the city authorities with a persistent request to immediately commence major repairs on one of the capital’s key transport facilities — the bridge named after Yevhen Paton.
Petition from Residents Regarding the Emergency Condition of the Bridge
An electronic petition has appeared on the official resource of the Kyiv City Council, in which the initiators emphasize that the Paton Bridge, opened on November 5, 1953, has never undergone major renovations. Over decades of operation, due to the effects of weather conditions and a sharp increase in traffic load, the structure has reached an emergency state — this is confirmed by the relevant state examination.
The signatories of the petition note that the Paton Bridge is a strategic infrastructure artery of Kyiv. Its potential closure or destruction could seriously complicate the traffic situation in the city.
“In order to restore the operational characteristics of the bridge and preserve its architecture as a local heritage site, it is necessary to start a comprehensive major repair work as soon as possible,” the residents emphasize in their document.
The Situation with Bridges in the Capital is Extremely Complex
According to the findings of the Commission for the Inspection of Bridge Structures, nearly 10% of bridges in Ukraine are in an emergency state. Experts particularly highlight two key Kyiv bridges with heavy vehicle traffic — the Yevhen Paton Bridge and the Metro Bridge, which have also been recognized as emergency.
Kyiv residents stress the need for urgent actions to preserve the Paton Bridge as an important transport and architectural object of the capital.
