Agents Spied on Kyiv’s Energy Infrastructure

The detainees are residents of Odesa and Khmelnytskyi regions, aged 19 and 21. This autumn, seeking easy money through Telegram channels, they were remotely recruited by Russian handlers and sent to Kyiv and its outskirts.

The main objective of the agents’ actions was to prepare for missile and drone attacks on critical energy facilities in the capital region, including thermal and hydroelectric power plants. To achieve this, they conducted reconnaissance of the area, identified the coordinates of energy structures, assessed their technical condition after previous shelling, and photographed and marked the locations of checkpoints on maps.

SSU Detained Spies During Reconnaissance

During a special operation, SSU officers and cyber specialists caught the perpetrators red-handed in Kyiv while they were conducting reconnaissance of potential targets for strikes. During searches, smartphones with encrypted chats in messengers, through which they maintained contact with their Russian handler, were seized from the detainees.

“SSU cyber specialists caught the agents ‘in the act’ in Kyiv while they were conducting reconnaissance at the addresses of potential targets.”

The Security Service continues its investigation to establish all the circumstances of the crime and those involved in preparing attacks on the region’s critical infrastructure.
