An extraordinary event occurred in the Dnipro district of Kyiv: a six-year-old boy ignited a hypermarket while his parents were shopping. The incident took place in the sales area, where the child was left unsupervised.

Details of the incident and consequences for the store

It is known that the boy approached a counter with lighters, took one of them, and set fire to a cardboard box containing a chair. The fire quickly spread to several neighboring shelves, engulfing a significant portion of the goods. As a result of the fire, the store suffered material losses amounting to over 30,000 hryvnias. Fortunately, no visitors or staff were harmed in the incident.

“While the parents were selecting goods and left their young son unsupervised, he approached the counter with lighters and took one of them, after which he ignited a cardboard box with a chair. The fire instantly spread to several other shelves with goods, and as a result of the fire, the store incurred losses of over 30,000 hryvnias. Fortunately, no visitors or staff of the establishment were harmed,” the report stated.

Law enforcement agencies conducted a preventive conversation with the child regarding the prevention of similar situations in the future. An administrative protocol was drawn up against the boy’s parents under part 1 of Article 184 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses, which pertains to the improper performance of parental duties regarding the upbringing of children. The law provides for a fine ranging from 850 to 1,700 hryvnias for this.

The Kyiv police emphasized the need for vigilant supervision of children in public places. Law enforcement urged adults not to leave young children unattended, especially in shopping centers, where the presence of dangerous items can lead to tragic consequences.

“The Kyiv police urge parents to be more vigilant regarding their children and under no circumstances leave them unsupervised,” the law enforcement officials appealed to the public.
