On the night of August 28, during another airstrike by Russian forces, one of the most famous architectural landmarks of the capital — the ‘House of Insects’, located at 93 Volodymyrska Street, was damaged.
Consequences of the shelling for the unique building
According to heritage conservationist Dmytro Perov, the shockwave caused windows in the building to shatter, and special conservation panels that had protected the monument from precipitation before the planned restoration fell out. Additionally, debris damaged the roof in several places and harmed the ceilings of the historic structure.
“The building has shattered windows, and the special conservation panels that protected the monument from precipitation before its restoration have fallen out. Falling debris punctured the roof of the historic building in several places and damaged the ceilings,” Perov wrote.
Previously, thanks to the efforts of local residents and activists, attempts by the developer to dismantle this architectural monument had been halted. An art gallery was also established in the building’s entrance.
History of the ‘House of Insects’
The neo-Gothic house was built in 1893 on the order of Kyiv resident Maria Stanislavska. Initially, the building was used as a rental property. In 2021, it was included in the List of Monuments of the City of Kyiv, and by 2023, developers began dismantling the building. Following the recent damage, activists are urging Kyiv residents and the city authorities to make efforts to preserve this unique historical heritage.
