A significant event is being celebrated at the capital’s zoo — the oldest resident of Kyiv Zoo, gorilla Toni, is turning 51.

On Friday, August 8, Kyiv Zoo is preparing for a special celebration: the only gorilla in Ukraine, Toni, is celebrating his birthday. In human years, his age exceeds 90, making Toni not only unique among the animals in the country but also one of the oldest representatives of his species in Europe.
Care and Daily Life of the Birthday Boy
The zoo emphasizes the importance of daily care for Toni. Thanks to the efforts of a team of zoologists and veterinarians, the gorilla receives a balanced diet and regularly performs special physical exercises, which help maintain good health and keep him active in old age.
“In human terms, that’s over 90 — and Toni is not only the only gorilla in Ukraine but also one of the oldest gorillas in Europe. Like any elderly person, our ‘grandpa’ has his own age-related features that require constant attention from specialists. Thanks to the daily care of the zoologists and veterinarians, a balanced diet, and special physical exercises, Toni has everything he needs to feel good and remain active — in his calm, measured rhythm,” the zoo explained.
Personality Traits and Celebration
Over the years at Kyiv Zoo, Toni has developed unique habits: he enjoys watching videos and magazines, strolling through his green habitat, playing with a ball, spinning a fruit wheel, cracking seeds, extracting honey from a homemade “termite mound,” relaxing in a hammock, and sleeping on fragrant hay.
Experts note Toni’s special character — he is cautious, distrustful, and sensible, sometimes displaying aggression, yet remains very self-loving. The animal only recognizes female caregivers, communicating with them through gestures, and does not allow men to approach him, clearly expressing his disapproval.
In honor of his birthday, a festive picnic will be prepared for the beloved gorilla in his favorite green habitat. Zoo visitors will have the chance to witness the birthday boy enjoying a special breakfast from August 8 to 10 at 11:00 AM.
