Lifting Restrictions on Long-Range Weapons for Ukraine: A Signal to Russia

«Сигнал для РФ, що атаки не залишаться безкарними» – народні депутати про дозвіл на далекобійні удари

People’s Deputy from the “Servant of the People” party, Fedir Venislavskyi, expressed the opinion that the decision of Western partners to lift restrictions on the range of weapons provided to Ukraine is an important and positive signal for Ukrainian defense. He emphasized that this sends a clear message to the Russian Federation that its terrorist attacks will not go unpunished.

“The very intentions expressed by the Chancellor of Germany and representatives of the British government are very positive. I think this is, you know, a very clear signal to Russia that its terrorist attacks will not go unpunished in any case. And Ukraine is enhancing both its own capabilities and our partners are ready to assist us in the areas we are discussing”

Venislavskyi added that currently, Ukrainian forces do not yet possess missiles capable of reaching targets in the center of the Russian capital, but they are actively working on it. “We are working on this; there are certain developments of our own,” he noted.

Capabilities and Prospects for the Use of Long-Range Weapons

Furthermore, the deputy emphasized that the acquisition of aviation strike assets by Ukraine, capable of reaching targets at a depth of over 500 kilometers, is a matter of short-term perspective. “The issue of obtaining missiles and aviation strike assets that can reach targets on Russian territory at a depth of over 500 kilometers is already very short-term,” he stressed.

For his part, the secretary of the committee on national security, defense, and intelligence, Roman Kostenko, believes that lifting restrictions on the use of long-range weapons is of a political nature and is a response from European countries to the diplomatic actions of the Kremlin. “These are the consequences of what Putin is doing. We remember that on May 10, leaders of European countries came here, made statements, and tried to put an ultimatum to Putin, and he seemed to mock them,” he said.

Kostenko added that while Ukraine previously had permission to use HIMARS during the Kursk operation, it now has the ability to strike military targets on Russian territory without additional restrictions, provided they receive the appropriate weapons. “The question again is for our partners to provide us with means for strikes, including Scalp and German Taurus missiles,” he noted.

The lifting of restrictions on the range of weapon use for Ukraine was officially confirmed by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who stated that the countries—Great Britain, France, and the USA—have lifted these restrictions. This allows Ukraine to use weapons for defense in any direction, including against military targets in Russia.
