Upcoming Negotiations and US Participation
Trump called the upcoming meeting “very important” and expressed optimism about the possibility of achieving “good results.” According to the White House, US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Keith Kellogg will accompany Rubio on this diplomatic mission.
Ukraine, with the support of its European allies, demanded that Russia agree to a 30-day ceasefire ahead of the weekend. In response, Putin proposed to hold direct negotiations in Turkey on May 15, without specifying the composition and level of the delegations.
Zelensky announced his intention to travel to Turkey in person, while the Kremlin has not confirmed whether Putin himself will attend the negotiations. On May 12, before departing from Washington to Riyadh, Trump stated that he was considering the possibility of flying to Istanbul to participate in the talks, but added that this week is very busy for him due to planned visits to three countries – Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
