Charges of Collaboration with the Aggressor Country
Although the name of the suspect has not been officially disclosed, details of the case and information in the media point to the parliamentarian from the “Servant of the People” faction, Yevheniy Shevchenko. The investigation has established that the deputy collaborated with Russia not only before but also after the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. New expert analyses and comprehensive investigative actions have confirmed his involvement in spreading Kremlin propaganda.
“Yes, after February 24, 2022, the deputy massively spread Kremlin propaganda fakes, calling on Ukrainians to lay down their arms before the Russians and attempting to discredit the Defense Forces. An independent examination confirmed the facts of the suspect’s criminal actions to the detriment of Ukraine’s defense capability and information security,” states the SBU.
Accusations and Possible Punishment
The State Bureau of Investigations clarifies that after the onset of the full-scale aggression by Russia, the suspect continued his illegal activities: recording programs on his own channels and giving interviews to pro-Russian bloggers. These materials were disseminated through Russian propaganda media, creating the impression in Russian society that his statements reflected the official position of the Ukrainian authorities. In them, the deputy discredited the Ukrainian leadership, claiming the alleged inability to hold territories and calling for negotiations with Russia on any terms.
Moreover, law enforcement officials have established that the parliamentarian repeatedly visited Belarus, where he met with local businessmen and officials. After these trips, he publicly stated that there was “no threat of an attack by Russian troops from the territory of Belarus,” which is regarded as spreading misinformation.
If the deputy’s guilt is proven in court, he faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property. It is worth noting that in November 2024, Yevheniy Shevchenko was already announced the first suspicion of treason, after which he was detained and taken into custody.
The position of Shevchenko himself regarding the new accusations is currently unknown. It is only known that his lawyer previously referred to the case against his client as a “collection of random documents.”
The SBU emphasizes that a person is considered innocent until proven guilty in a lawful manner by a court verdict.
