Obolon Embankment May Become a Source of Conflicts Due to New Markings

Оболонська набережна може стати місцем конфлікту: названо причину

On the Obolon Embankment in Kyiv, unidentified individuals have applied new road markings that may lead to an increase in conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists. This was reported by the civic organization «Passengers of Kyiv». According to activists, there was previously no clear separation of flows in this part of the waterfront, which forced cyclists to ride more slowly and avoid quick maneuvers. The updated markings create the illusion that cyclists will be able to ride faster, while pedestrians will remain on their paths, particularly on the bike lanes, as seen in the photographs. Experts say this could lead to collisions and conflict situations. It is worth noting that there are no road signs officially marking the existence of a bike lane.

Quality and Safety of Bike Lanes

Experts from the civic organization «Passengers of Kyiv» emphasize that to ensure safety, bike lanes must have clear surfacing, distinct from sidewalks, and be physically separated from pedestrian areas. Only under such conditions can we talk about effective and safe movement for cyclists, which will help avoid conflicts with pedestrians and enhance the comfort of both parties.

«Previously, there was no such obvious separation of flows on the embankment, which forced cyclists not to speed up. Now cyclists will ride faster, while pedestrians will walk as they did (including on the bike lane, as seen in the photo), which will provoke conflicts»
