Parubiy’s Family Demands 15 Million Hryvnias in Moral Compensation in His Murder Case

Родина Парубія подала цивільний позов про моральне відшкодування на 15 млн гривень

The trial regarding the murder of people’s deputy and public figure Andriy Parubiy has begun in the Frankivsk District Court of Lviv. The first preparatory hearing took place on April 1, during which the court allowed the media to cover the proceedings and extended the preventive measure for the accused, 53-year-old Lviv resident Mykhailo Stselnykov. He will remain in custody without the right to bail until May 30, 2026.

Civil Claim and Victims’ Demands

Relatives of Andriy Parubiy have filed a civil claim demanding 15 million hryvnias in moral damages. According to lawyer Yuriy Zoshiy, this amount corresponds to the one-time state assistance provided for the families of deceased servicemen. The accused is entitled to receive part of this assistance due to the death of his son, serviceman Mykhailo Stselnykov (call sign “Lemberg”), but the lawyer emphasizes that such compensation may be seized by the court within the framework of the civil claim.

“The amount of such assistance is 15 million, and his share is 7.5 million. This sum is comparable to the demands we have made in the claim. Legislation stipulates that a person wishing to receive these funds must submit notarized documents. The accused can take advantage of this and apply within three years. It is illogical for the state to pay Stselnykov this money when he is being charged under a criminal code article that provides for the confiscation of all property. Property rights have a monetary value and are subject to seizure. Seizure can be imposed not only on material objects but also on property rights, including the right to claim. Therefore, in our opinion, the clearly defined equivalent of 7.5 million can be subject to seizure to ensure the civil code. We are not aware of any other individuals, apart from the mother and father, who are claiming,” says the victims’ lawyer.

The serviceman Mykhailo Stselnykov also left behind a wife, so the compensation should be divided equally among three individuals. The injured party demands that the court prohibit the Ministry of Defense and the command of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from paying monetary assistance to the accused until a verdict is announced.

Circumstances of the Case and Positions of the Parties

The civil claim is accompanied by a characterization of the deceased Andriy Parubiy as a person who defended the sovereignty and interests of Ukraine. As the lawyer explained, the amount of compensation corresponds to the sum provided by the state for such cases.

Mykhailo Stselnykov himself stated that he does not claim any payments and will not submit the relevant documents. He explained his position by saying that he acted out of personal motives.

The accused is charged under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: treason in a state of war, public calls for violent change of the constitutional order, encroachment on the life of a public figure, carrying and storing weapons without permission, as well as glorification of individuals who committed armed aggression against Ukraine.

It is worth noting that Andriy Parubiy was shot on August 30, 2025, near his home in Lviv. On September 1, law enforcement detained the suspect in Khmelnytskyi region, and on September 2, the court chose a preventive measure in the form of detention.

During a conversation with journalists before the hearing, Stselnykov admitted his guilt in the murder, calling it personal revenge against the Ukrainian authorities. His ex-wife Olena Cherninko noted that there were strained relations between the father and son, and she raised her son alone after the divorce.

The body of Mykhailo-Viktor Stselnykov (call sign “Lemberg”) was identified using DNA, and he was buried in Lviv on March 3, 2026. The continuation of the preparatory hearing in the case of Andriy Parubiy’s murder is scheduled for April 27.
