In Kyiv, in Podil on Yaroslaviv Val Street, 10, another violation of cultural heritage has been recorded — a developer has dismantled part of a historic building located in the buffer protection zone of St. Sophia Cathedral.

Damage to a 19th-century architectural monument
The building, constructed in 1877 according to the design of architect O. Shile, has fallen under development: the owner of the premises, covering the facade with a protective curtain, has dismantled the first two floors and effectively started new construction. This was reported by heritage protector Dmytro Perov, who emphasized the scale of the destruction.
“Another construction curtain has fallen in the very center of the city. This time on Yaroslaviv Val Street, 10, the dismantling of the painted facade has revealed the destruction of the house by architect O. Shile, 1877,” wrote Dmytro Perov.
Complete destruction of interiors and violation of protection status
According to the activist, during the work, all internal and external ceilings were completely destroyed, and the original Kyiv yellow bricks were replaced with modern materials — gas blocks and metal piles. The interiors of the mansion, which are nearly 150 years old, have been irretrievably lost. It is particularly emphasized that these actions took place in the buffer protection zone of the UNESCO World Heritage site — St. Sophia Cathedral, where any new construction is strictly prohibited.

The situation has raised concerns among the public and specialists in the field of cultural heritage protection, as such actions not only destroy the historical face of the city but also create precedents for ignoring legislation regarding the protection of national significance monuments.
