How Law Enforcement Found Out

After receiving information about the discovered bones in a yard in the Podil district of the city, the police initiated an investigation.

“Law enforcement officials do not see any criminal activity. The human remains found in the capital’s Podil are not related to any crime but are the result of archaeological excavations.”

— reported the Main Directorate of the National Police of Ukraine in Kyiv. Investigative and operational groups, forensic experts, a forensic medical expert, and representatives of the district police were dispatched to the scene.

Archaeological Discovery

It was later revealed that the area where the remains were found belongs to the Podil archaeological expedition of the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. A representative of the institute confirmed that these fragments of human bones were collected by archaeologists in the 19th and 20th centuries in this area. They were previously stored at the institute but have now lost their scientific value, and plans for their reburial are forthcoming.

The police are currently collaborating with the institute’s management regarding the proper storage of archaeological finds and their subsequent accounting procedures.
