Proposed Increase of the Age Limit for Men Traveling Abroad to 22 Years

Зеленський доручив уряду підняти до 22 років вікове обмеження на виїзд чоловіків за кордон

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has instructed the government, along with military leadership, to consider the possibility of raising the age limit for men traveling abroad to 22 years. The aim of this step is to simplify border crossing for young people and to maintain their connections with the country, especially in the field of education.

Raising the Age Limit for Travel

Zelensky noted that there is currently a restriction on men aged 18 and older traveling abroad, but he proposed raising this limit to 22 years. The President believes that this decision will open up more opportunities for young Ukrainians, help them maintain their connection with Ukraine, and allow them to realize their potential in education.

“At this time, there is a restriction: 18 years at the border, I propose raising the level to 22 years. So there are no restrictions when crossing. I believe this is a positive story and will help many young Ukrainians maintain ties with Ukraine and realize themselves in Ukraine – primarily in education,” Zelensky wrote on Telegram on August 12.

Improving Conditions for Students

In addition to changes in border crossing rules, Zelensky instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to simplify the conditions for admission to Ukrainian higher education institutions. He also stated that an agreement has been reached with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance regarding the consideration of increasing scholarships starting next year. The President expressed hope that the necessary resources would be allocated for this, and it is already planned to enhance support for students who demonstrate significant academic achievements.

All details regarding the new decisions are to be provided by the government within ten days.

Earlier, the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Oksen Lisovyi, reported that although a certain number of high school graduates travel abroad after the 11th grade, this trend is not widespread.

Following the onset of the full-scale aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine on February 24, martial law was declared, and general mobilization was announced. Since then, most men aged 18 to 60 have been prohibited from leaving the country.
