According to the publication’s sources, during a meeting with Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff in St. Petersburg in early April, Putin also noted that Moscow might abandon its claims to parts of Ukrainian regions that are partially occupied by Russia but remain under Kyiv’s control.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the FT that “intense work is ongoing” and emphasized: “We are negotiating with the American side. The work is complex and takes a lot of time, so it is difficult to expect immediate results, and it cannot be done publicly.”
Negotiations to End the War
On April 17, negotiations took place in Paris involving Ukraine, the USA, France, the United Kingdom, and Germany regarding the conclusion of Russia’s war in Ukraine. The next round is scheduled for April 23 in London.
US Hopes and Pressure on Ukraine
On April 20, US President Donald Trump expressed hope that Ukraine and Russia would reach an agreement next week. He also added that after this, both countries would “start doing great business with the thriving USA and make fortunes.”
According to The Wall Street Journal, Ukraine is under pressure to respond this week to a series of ideas from the Trump administration regarding the cessation of the war, including the possible recognition by the USA of Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the exclusion of Kyiv from the list of NATO candidates.
These ideas were outlined in a confidential document presented to the Ukrainian delegation in Paris on April 17. They were also presented to European high-ranking officials during a one-day meeting. The USA is now awaiting a response from Kyiv, which is likely to come during a meeting of American, Ukrainian, and European officials in London this week.
