Research Shows Trends in the Quality of School Education in Ukraine

Навчання школярів: чим стурбовані фахівці

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has published the results of a monitoring study on the quality of primary education, which revealed both positive changes and persistent problems in the education system. The analysis covered over 10,000 fourth-grade students from 407 institutions across 20 regions of the country, excluding certain areas and Crimea.

Positive Trends in Mathematical Literacy and Reading Challenges

According to the study, students in grades 1-4 demonstrate improvements in mathematical competence: 85.4% of students surpassed the basic threshold, which is a better result compared to 2021 (83.9%) and slightly lower than the level in 2018 (86.6%). At the same time, the situation in reading leaves much to be desired. The basic reading level was surpassed by 82.3% of students, which almost matches the result from 2021 (82.5%), but significantly lags behind the figure from 2018 (86.4%). Experts explain the decline in results by the difficulties faced by younger students due to the challenges of war.

The study also highlights differences in the quality of education between urban and rural schools. The highest results are shown by students from large cities with populations over 700,000 residents.

Stabilization of Education Quality and Challenges in Difficult Conditions

Analysts assert that the results indicate a stabilization of the quality of primary education after the pandemic period, although the system still operates under challenging conditions. The monitoring was conducted in 20 regions, excluding Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Kherson regions, as well as in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.
