Seasonal Illnesses Experienced by Kyiv Residents: Summary of the 2024–2025 Epidemic Season

The epidemiological season for 2024–2025 regarding influenza and acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI) has ended in Kyiv. According to the Kyiv City Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health, the incidence rate during this period remained below the annual average and did not exceed the epidemic threshold.

Main Indicators of Illness Among the Population

Throughout the entire epidemic season, 366,446 residents of the capital fell ill, accounting for 12.4% of the total population. Compared to the previous year, the incidence rate decreased by 1.2 times. The highest increase in cases was recorded in weeks 9 and 10 of 2025; however, even during this period, the epidemic threshold was not exceeded, remaining lower by 10.9% and 6.2%, respectively.

During the season, various viruses circulated in the city: influenza A and B, adenovirus, bocavirus, parainfluenza, metapneumovirus, rhinovirus, RSV, coronavirus, and SARS-CoV-2.

Illness Among Children and Fatal Cases

Children under 17 years old constituted a significant portion of the sick — 219,028 individuals, which is 59.8% of all cases of influenza and ARVI. An especially high incidence rate among schoolchildren was recorded in week 10 of the season — 7,749 cases, accounting for 63.5% of all sick children and 35.1% of those who sought medical assistance.

“During the epidemic season, 1,749 individuals fell ill with COVID-19, which constituted 0.5 percent of the total number of influenza and ARVI cases and 0.06 percent of the city’s population. Among children under 17 years old, 213 cases of illness were registered. At the same time, 7,372 patients with influenza and ARVI were hospitalized in the city’s healthcare facilities (2% of the total number of sick), of which 5,171 were children.”

In total, 49 fatal cases among adults were recorded during the season: 38 individuals died due to complications caused by influenza A and B, and 11 from COVID-19. Hospitalization was required for 7,372 patients with influenza and ARVI, the majority of whom were children. Among those ill with COVID-19, 378 individuals were admitted to hospitals, 97 of whom were children; 47 adults were in intensive care and resuscitation units.
