Visit Amid Relations with Russia

It is noted that Vucic, who is known for his friendly relations with Russia, will participate in the “Ukraine – Southeast Europe” summit. This event will mark the first visit of the Serbian leader to Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion by Russia in February 2022.

In May of this year, Vucic attended a military parade in Moscow, where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite close ties with the Russian Federation, Serbia remains the only European candidate country for EU membership that has not joined the European Union’s sanctions regime against Moscow due to its aggression against Ukraine. Serbian officials continue to maintain connections with the Kremlin.

Vucic’s Position on Relations with Moscow

At the same time, the Serbian President has repeatedly denied claims of particularly close relations with Putin and emphasized that Belgrade is not a “Trojan horse” for Moscow in Europe.

“In this context, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic rejected claims that he maintains close ties with Putin and assured that his country is not a ‘Trojan horse’ for Moscow in Europe.”
