Preparation of British Troops and Role in the Coalition
After completing reconnaissance missions in Ukraine during the summer, British military officials have identified which units can be deployed, how they will be stationed in Ukraine, and what roles they will fulfill within the “coalition of the willing.” The Defense Minister stated that these decisions are based on a thorough assessment of the situation and are coordinated with coalition partners according to the current needs of the Ukrainian side.
“We have conducted reconnaissance in Ukraine, so we know which units we will be using, we know how we will deploy them, and we know what roles they will play,” Healey told reporters in response to a Bloomberg inquiry on Wednesday.
Deployment Plans and Position on the Peace Agreement
The United Kingdom is considering sending its military to Ukraine to help ensure a lasting peace after the war ends. John Healey emphasized that final plans will be detailed in collaboration with other coalition member countries and will depend on the parameters of the future peace agreement. In particular, it is expected that British units will operate not on the front lines but in areas away from combat, focusing on supporting and training Ukrainian forces.
The updated intentions of the United Kingdom have emerged amid a visit by an American military delegation to Kyiv and the development of a new U.S. peace plan. According to several leading global media outlets, the draft document suggests that Ukraine may be forced to make concessions, including ceding part of its territory and reducing military support from the U.S. However, the specific terms of the plan have not been officially disclosed, and the participation of Kyiv, British, and European allies in these negotiations has not been confirmed.
European diplomats, particularly from London, are quite skeptical about the likelihood of such an agreement being reached. Russia traditionally opposes the presence of Western troops on Ukrainian territory.
The British Defense Minister emphasized that he is inspired by the activity of the American delegation in Kyiv and expressed determination to support peace initiatives that could facilitate mediation in resolving the conflict. At the same time, London continues to train Ukrainian forces both on UK territory and aims to expand opportunities for troop training directly in Ukraine.
