Seven Years in Prison for Hotel Theft During Blackout in Kyiv

A Kyiv resident has been sentenced to seven years in prison for a series of thefts during a blackout in the capital.

The Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv found the city resident guilty of stealing from a hotel in the city center during a power outage. The incident occurred on Sofiivska Street, where the perpetrator, taking advantage of the lack of light, illegally entered the hotel premises and stole cash from the bar counter. His actions were noticed by a security guard, but the thief could not be apprehended on the spot.

Details of the Criminal Activity

While patrolling the area, officers noticed a suspicious man. Upon seeing the police, he began to flee, but was apprehended. During the investigation, it was established that the 33-year-old detainee was also involved in another theft — he stole a bicycle worth 14,000 hryvnias from the premises of a temple.

“During the pre-trial investigation, we established that the 33-year-old local resident was also involved in another theft — the suspect stole a bicycle worth 14,000 hryvnias from the premises of a temple,” the prosecutor’s office reported.

Punishment and Previous Crimes

It turned out that the man already had previous convictions for robbery, theft, and other crimes. For the new incidents, he was charged under Part 4 of Article 186 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (robbery committed under martial law) and Part 4 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (theft committed under martial law).

The court sentenced him to seven years in prison.
