In Kyiv, in honor of the Day of the State Flag and the Day of Independence of Ukraine, the statues of the founding children of the capital, located in Postal Square, traditionally received a new festive look. This year, each character was dressed in new vyshyvankas and special thematic attire that highlights national traditions and contemporary symbolism.

Festive Attire from a Kyiv Family of Artists
The author of the sculptural composition, Volodymyr Zhuravel, shared photos of the updated children on his Facebook page. According to him, unique clothing elements representing different regions of Ukraine were selected for each figure. In particular, the vyshyvanka of Lybid comes from Chernihiv region, Kyi received clothing from Volyn, and Khoriv from Kyiv region.
“The embroidered shirts on Lybid are from Chernihiv region, on Kyi from Volyn, and on Khoriv from Kyiv,” he wrote on his page.
Creating the festive attire became a true family affair. The vyshyvankas for the children were made by the sculptor’s wife, Kateryna Zhuravel, together with her sisters, Valentyna and Mariya Lehka. Thanks to their craftsmanship, the statues received a bright and patriotic appearance that attracts the attention of locals and guests of the capital.
Patriotic Patches and Military Symbolism
This year, special attention is drawn to the image of Shchek, who received attire with patches from the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the holiday. It is in these units that the sculptor’s brothers, Dmytro and Ruslan, serve. This emphasizes the connection between the artist’s family history and the heroism of Ukraine’s defenders.

Such annual initiatives not only beautify the city but also remind us of unity, the continuity of traditions, and the strength of the Ukrainian people in their struggle for independence.
