Traffic organization issues at Kyiv’s interchanges lead to an increase in accidents

Renowned urban planner Stanislav Klymenko shared during an interview the most dangerous areas in Kyiv for pedestrians and drivers, which he considers the riskiest regarding road traffic accidents.
Halytska Square — The Main Risk Point
“In terms of accident rates, Halytska Square is definitely the most dangerous. This is problem number one: the pedestrian crossings are very spread out, there is a very active left turn, and the intersection is very stretched,” he said.
According to the expert, Halytska Square tops the list of the most dangerous places in Kyiv due to the complex structure of the intersections, excessively distant pedestrian crossings, and heavy traffic flow, especially during left turns. Such traffic organization significantly increases the risk of accidents.
Other Critical Points in the Capital
In addition to Halytska Square, Stanislav Klymenko included the area near the VDNH, the interchange at the Paton Bridge, and Darnytsia Square in the list of problematic transport hubs in Kyiv. The latter, according to the specialist, is particularly noted for its low level of convenience for pedestrians.
Klymenko emphasized that Darnytsia Square poses significant challenges for public transport passengers, as transferring requires covering a long distance through an underground passage.
Another area of heightened danger is the vicinity of the “Chernihivska” metro station. In the urban planner’s opinion, this transport interchange does not meet modern standards of inclusivity and safety, and the multi-level structure of exits and passages complicates pedestrian movement and creates additional risks for all road users.
