Sweden to Allocate $1.6 Billion to Ukraine in New Military Aid

Sweden has announced the allocation of 16 billion kronor to Ukraine, equivalent to $1.6 billion, as part of a new military aid package. This package is the largest since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022, according to the country’s government.

Swedish Defense Minister Paul Jonson emphasized the importance of this decision: “Sweden wants to

make it clear that we are strengthening our support, increasing its strength and scale

“. He also noted that this aid package will include support for the Ukrainian air defense system, artillery, satellite communications, and naval capabilities.

Structure of the Aid

According to the government, the main portion of the package, amounting to nine billion kronor, will be used to purchase materials, primarily from the Swedish and European defense industries, taking into account ‘Ukrainian needs’. An additional five billion kronor will be provided through multilateral initiatives, including within the framework of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG).

Recent Achievements

Additionally, about half a billion kronor will be provided through donations from the existing stocks of the Swedish Armed Forces. This latest package is the 19th tranche of military aid provided by Sweden to Ukraine, with a total amount, according to the government, reaching 80 billion kronor.

Sweden has also announced the transfer of 18 Archer self-propelled howitzers and five Arthur radar stations to Ukraine as part of this military aid package.
