Over the past year, Russian President Vladimir Putin has lost three key allies: in Syria, Bashar al-Assad’s regime has collapsed; in Venezuela, the government of Nicolás Maduro has destabilized; and in Iran, the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has died. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga noted that Putin was unable to assist any of these close partners, indicating a serious weakening of the Russian Federation’s influence on the global stage.

Three Key Conclusions on Russia’s Loss of Influence
Sybiga emphasized that these events confirm several important trends. First, Russia is not a reliable ally even for those states that heavily rely on its support. Second, while Russia is engaged in a protracted war against Ukraine, refusing to cease its aggression, its authority in the world is rapidly declining. Third, the trend toward the overthrow of authoritarian regimes is only intensifying, and Putin’s downfall has become a matter of time.
“First, Russia is not a reliable ally even for those who heavily depend on it. Second, while Russia is stuck in its senseless war against Ukraine, which it will never win and refuses to end, its influence in the world is sharply declining. Third, the domino effect of fallen dictators must continue, and Putin’s downfall is inevitable one day. Together, we must make every effort to bring this joyous day closer and ensure accountability for all Russian crimes. Justice is inevitable.”
Putin’s Reaction and the Situation in Iran
On March 1, Vladimir Putin publicly expressed condolences regarding the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, acknowledging that this crime was the result of airstrikes by the United States and Israel. In a message to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, he referred to the deceased as a “distinguished statesman” and emphasized his role in developing relations between Russia and Iran. According to official information, Khamenei and several members of his family were killed during the attack. At the same time, Israel and the United States confirmed the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader as a result of joint strikes.
Tehran has already announced the establishment of a temporary leadership council, which includes the country’s president, the head of the judiciary, and a representative of the Guardian Council. This decision was made urgently to ensure the stability of government administration following Khamenei’s death.
