According to official information, the ice sports complex will continue its operations in the usual mode until the end of the current season. Children and young athletes will be able to train at the arena until May 31, 2026.
Strategic Plans for Preserving the Sports Complex
Olena Hovorova, Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration for Self-Government Issues, emphasized that the city authorities are seeking optimal solutions for the continued operation of ‘Kryzhynka’. She noted that the property complex is privately owned, and the city rents the ice rink and sports hall for figure skating training for children.
“The current owner of the ice arena is open to dialogue with the city. Together we are discussing in what format ‘Kryzhynka’ will continue to exist, and we are trying to create a model that is beneficial for both parties – the owner and the residents of Kyiv. Currently, there are rumors among the parents of the sports school students that a residential complex might be built there. However, these concerns are unfounded: the building is located within a protected natural complex,” said Hovorova.
To ensure the stable operation of the ice arena, the city administration, together with the Department of Youth and Sports, is working on several options for further action. In particular, consultations are being held with the leaders of two sports schools that use ‘Kryzhynka’ for training. Specialists are determining how to meet the needs of the students in case cooperation with the new owner ceases.
The Need for Ice Arenas and Attracting Partners
Olena Hovorova emphasized that there is significant demand for ice rinks in Kyiv. The situation has worsened since the onset of the full-scale war: many children from various regions have arrived in the capital and are actively engaged in winter sports under the guidance of Kyiv coaches.
The city authorities are not limited to waiting for a final decision from the owner of the arena. The administration is actively seeking and attracting state and business partners to open an additional ice arena without using budget funds. This will expand sports opportunities for the youth and avoid a shortage of training spaces.
