In the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kyiv, the house of the renowned Ukrainian mathematician Dmytro Grava is on the verge of collapse. This building, constructed in 1909, is an important historical site, as it was home to and the workplace of a professor at Kyiv University, the founder of the first major mathematical school in Ukraine.

According to a report from Kyiv heritage protector Dmytro Perov, the building located at 9 Observatory Street is under threat due to unauthorized renovations that took place on the first floor. Recently, repair work began there; however, the builders, lacking the necessary approvals, dismantled internal walls, leading to the collapse of masonry and the settling of the façade wall.
Lack of Response from City Services
Perov emphasized that residents of the building have already noticed cracks appearing in their apartments following the work done. Unfortunately, there has been no appropriate response from the relevant city services.
Dangerous Situation
The activist also noted that the builders propped up the ceiling of the first floor with anchor braces and left the site in a dangerous condition, leaving piles of broken old bricks on the floor. This situation raises concerns among residents and activists, who are demanding urgent measures to prevent possible collapse consequences.
“As a result of unauthorized renovations at 9 Observatory Street, the building from 1909 is at risk of collapse,” stated Dmytro Perov.
