Leader of the conservatives Friedrich Merz presented a “strong plan” for a united movement forward for Germany on Wednesday, and announced the formation of a coalition government that he will lead as Chancellor.

“The agreement is a very strong and clear signal to the citizens of our country. It is also a clear signal to our partners in the European Union,” Merz stated during a press conference with his coalition partners.
Election Victory and Future of the Government
This agreement is the result of several weeks of intensive negotiations following the successful victory of the alliance of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) led by Merz and the Christian Social Union (CSU) in the parliamentary elections.
The new government will lead the country for the next four years in partnership with the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). The CDU/CSU bloc won the Bundestag elections in February, while the Social Democrats came in third. As a result, these two political forces have a majority in the Bundestag, allowing them to form a government without involving representatives from other parties.
Political Priorities of the New Cabinet
The new cabinet is expected to continue its policy of supporting Ukraine and to increase defense spending. Other political priorities of the future government will be outlined in the coalition agreement.
