Trump Announces Decision on Transferring Tomahawk Missiles to Ukraine

Трамп заявив, що «нібито» ухвалив рішення, чи постачати ракети «Томагавк» Україні

Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated on October 6 that he “allegedly” made a decision regarding the transfer of Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine, but did not specify whether this decision is positive or negative for Kyiv.

“I think I want to know what they will do with them. Where will they send them? I guess I would have to ask that question,” the U.S. president told reporters in the Oval Office.

Position of Other Leaders on Tomahawk Supply

Russian President Vladimir Putin commented last week on the possibility of providing American Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, stating that it would lead to “a completely new level of escalation” in relations between Moscow and Washington. He also described these missiles as “not quite modern” and expressed the opinion that their transfer would not affect the balance of power on the battlefield.

In September, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine is negotiating with the United States for long-range weapons, but did not specify which systems are being discussed.

Characteristics of the Tomahawk Missile and Strategic Significance

The Tomahawk is a cruise missile manufactured by RTX with a range of up to 1,000 miles (over 1,600 kilometers). This significantly exceeds the capabilities of American ATACMS missile systems, which can strike targets at distances of up to 190 miles. Compared to Ukrainian drones, the Tomahawk has greater combat power and speed, allowing it to strike deep targets within the Russian Federation, although modern air defense systems can complicate their use.

Over the past year, Ukraine has repeatedly appealed to international partners for long-range weapons to defend against Russian aggression. At the same time, Kyiv is developing its own missile programs, including the “Palyanytsia” and “Flamingo” systems, but their combat characteristics fall short of the Tomahawk.
