Former US President Donald Trump announced on August 22 his intention to determine a further strategy regarding Russia and Ukraine within the next two weeks. During a meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the White House, Trump emphasized the importance of the upcoming decision, which could include both extensive sanctions and tariffs, or even both options simultaneously.

“I think in two weeks I will understand Russia’s position and, honestly, Ukraine’s as well. It takes two. I think I will make a decision on what we will do. And it will be a very important decision. Whether it’s extensive sanctions, extensive tariffs, or both. Or I will do nothing and say ‘this is your war’
Possible Participation in Negotiations and Position on Compromises
Trump noted that he would like to personally participate in a potential meeting between the presidents of Russia and Ukraine — Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky. At the same time, he acknowledged that many are skeptical about the prospects of such a meeting, believing it will not yield results.
According to analysts, Trump does not plan to exert significant pressure on Moscow during the likely negotiations. It is believed that the US administration expects concessions from Kyiv, particularly due to its dependence on Western support. This could lead to Ukraine being forced to agree to a deal that aligns with the interests of the Russian Federation.
Prospects for Negotiations and Ukraine’s Position
Experts note that if the negotiation process is not sufficiently dynamic, Trump may lose interest in it. Additionally, significant difficulties arise regarding security guarantees for Ukraine, including the possibility of deploying mixed foreign military contingents on its territory.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly advocated for bilateral dialogue with Putin; however, he stated that the Russian side is deliberately obstructing the organization of such a summit.
